Geomorphic Mapping exercise

Due Wednesday, October 4, 2006 In this exercise, you are to draw on the discussions from the lecture on mapping and aerial photography. Step 1: and make a \emph{morphologic map} on one of the following stereopairs of your choice:
DesertLandForms25.pdf
MassMovements6.pdf
ModernGlaciers10.pdf
RockStructure68.pdf
StreamErosion40.pdf
VolcanicFeatures51.pdf

Do the mapping on a piece of mylar. Use these symbols to start, but use others as necessary. Make sure to include an explanation and follow Ramon's mapping mantras from the lecture.

Step 2: On a second piece of mylar overlain on the morphologic map, make a more interpretive "photogeologic/geomorphic map." This map will show your interpretation of the main geologic/geomorphic units and try to tell the geologic/geomorphic history of the site. It will have both lines (contacts, faults, etc.) as well as polygons that define the units.

Step 3: Answer these questions:
What are the main landforms in the mapping area?
What are the main surface processes operating in the area?
What is the history of landscape change in the area? How do you know? What major geologic events to you infer occurred there? How do you know and what was their sequence (it is ok if ambiguous)?
